I decided to visit VODA sauna after reading reviews on multiple places on the web that called VODA sauna "the best and busiest sauna in Moscow". I'm now convinced the owners/employees of VODA sauna wrote those flattering reviews. The place is a run-down dump.
But first, let me describe the men because that is the main reason we go to a sauna. As in every other Russian sauna, the most attractive men in the place were the rentboys. And there were definitely some that were handsome, but only one was truly gorgeous. The patrons were decidedly less attractive. If you include the rentboys, there were probably about 40 guys there on a Saturday around midnight. The patrons ranged from one guy who appeared to be in his late 50s/early 60s to a handful of guys in their twenties. Most of the guys were in their mid-to-late 30s. There were 3 or 4 patrons that I considered fuckable. The rest ranged from unattractive to very unattractive. Aside from one rentboy, there was no one there that I considered extremely hot or funy.
Most of the fun took place behind closed doors. I didn't see a single group encounter (which sucked for me because I like groups). There was one cute young guy who sat in his room most of the time I was there with the door open watching porn and jacking off, but he spent most of his time alone. And there were 2 guys in their early 20s who put on a show by leaving their door open while one blew the other one. But overall, I'd say the funual atmosphere was restrained. There seemed to be very little hooking up and what did happen was furtive and brief.
The actual facility was fairly disgusting. Flattering/Mood lighting is always good at a fun club, but most of this place was much too dark. The furniture was old and pretty worn. The water in the jacuzzi looked brownish and dirty. I don't know if he was a prostitute or a patron, but one guy was passed out on a bench outside one of the cabins. He eventually began to vomit all over the floor in the hallways. I never saw anyone clean it up.
And while this may seem an odd thing to mention, I feel I have to warn anyone who might go there that there are slipping and tripping hazards EVERYWHERE! Just outside the sauna, the ground slopes very slightly...but the slope is pretty much in the dark and is slippery because guys coming out of the sauna are dripping wet. It was like stepping on a banana peel...I almost fell a couple of times in that spot. Every time I went down the main staircase I missed the first step and nearly fell down the whole flight of stairs. I don't know if anyone has ever been injured in a fall in this place, but it would not surprise me.
And finally, a few words about the guy collecting money at the door: I don't speak Russian, and I know that must be a pain for him...but he was fucking *rude*--curt and unfriendly.
I would never, ever recommend VODA sauna to anyone.
